YOU NEED THESE SOFT SKILLS TO SUCCEED

You may be a professor, a computer expert, or a Ph.D. holder, but to be successful in your career, you need more than just expertise in your field. Soft skills are combination of personality traits, behaviors, and social attitudes that allow people to communicate effectively, collaborate, and successfully manage differences in opinion.

Here are important soft skills you need:

Communication Skills – Successful communication involves your ability to speak clearly and concisely, apply body language and facial expressions. It is also your ability to relay information using pictures and other visual aids, and to actively listen to and hear what others say. You need to be able to listen to understand how to best communicate with someone. Without strong listening skills, any communication efforts will be one-sided and probably ineffective.

Work Ethic – Many managers do not like to spend time micromanaging employees. They expect you to be proactive and be able to do the job you were employed to do, which includes being punctual at work, meeting deadlines, and staying committed to your work.

Problem Solving – Good problem solvers are able to analyze challenges and work toward solutions, either alone or in a group. This skill includes critical thinking, decision-making, and the willingness to ask questions and explore new ideas.

Interpersonal Skills – This is a broad category of “people skills” and includes building and maintaining relationships, developing rapport, and using diplomacy. It also includes giving and receiving constructive criticism, being tolerant and respectful regarding others’ opinions, empathizing with them. This is one of the most important of all the soft skills examples because it is central to building teams with a strong foundation of trust and accountability.

Productivity – Employees with strong productivity skills are able to strategize, organize, plan, and deliver results. When people can count on you to get things done on time, you become an invaluable member of the team.

But suppose you don’t have these skills? It’s never too late to develop them. You can learn a lot by observing other people within your company who excel in the above skills mentioned.Another way to develop this is to take on more responsibilities at work (serving on committees, planning events, etc.) can help you gain valuable experience.
