HOW TO AVOID PROCRASTINATION

All of us procrastinate. It’s easy to put off hard or time-consuming tasks. We’ve all been there at some point. Here are 5 tips for avoiding procrastination that can help you break out of paralysis and start producing at your peak:

1. Finish your day before it starts (Plan ahead)

The best decision you can make towards avoiding procrastination is to plan your days in advance. Rather than frantically figuring out what you’ll do on any given day, a better way to approach your day would be to take a few minutes at the end of each day to quickly map out the following day.

2. Reduce the number of tasks/ Set small goals

Oftentimes, the thought of completing one large task can seem overwhelming. Getting from the beginning to end can seem an impossible task. However, breaking such tasks down into much smaller steps can be useful. Having a list of small and achievable goals can help you tackle each one in turn, meaning that you make gradual progress towards completion.

3. Get Organized

You are more likely to procrastinate if you don’t have a set plan or idea for completing your work. Investing in a planner is a good idea. Having a detailed timeline and deadlines for when you will complete each of your small goals can also keep you motivated to reach your main goals. When you’re organized, it gives you a more orderly and measured framework within which to work.

4. Eliminate Distractions

Getting rid of distractions is another tip to avoid procrastination. By limiting the number of distractions around you, you’re more likely to get done what you need to do. Shut your phone off, retreat to a quiet place and listen to classical music or white noise to drown out any noise.

5. Forgive yourself

It can be easy to punish yourself for procrastinating. You may tell yourself that you’re being lazy or unproductive. In reality, attacking yourself in this way only serves to make you feel more frustrated and anxious and doesn’t add to productivity. By being mindful of the situation, you can develop self-compassion and forgiveness. Not only can being kind to yourself reduce procrastination itself, but it can also reduce some of the negative effects of procrastinating.

6. Reward yourself

Rewarding yourself may create an incentive to complete a task and help avoid procrastination. After studying for a test or completing a work task, consider giving yourself a reward. It could be as simple as, “Once I finish this assignment, I can watch an episode of my favorite show.”
